LJ: The election, and other reasons I've been gone so long...

Well, even more than the election, I hate to say it, but the reason I haven't written is because I haven't had much to write about. The month of October was a massive runon of 80, 90 and 100 work weeks, and even one 28-hour work day (and me, at the end of it, driving about 5 tons of lighting equipment from University Park around to 66 on the beltway and attempting to stay awake).

Which is part of the reason I decided to come back tonight. I've realized over the past couple of weeks that I absolutely, genuinely love my job. Of course - just like with any job - there are things I would change if I were in control of the whole thing. I'd fire some people who just couldn't get things done when I needed them to be done, and I'd hire others who A) wouldn't mind being hired, and B) absolutely would get the job done - and, it should be noted, usually do when I hire out for temporary contract labor.

But small gripes aside, I love everyhting about my job. I'm very happy to be able to say that I am a Professional Lighting Designer. I'm very happy to be able to see the progress I've made since the end of October, when I was really mucking things up, to now, when I handled even more situations with far more success. And the greatest part is, my boss noted this and commented about it to me on Friday.

This is, I'm coming to realize, what I've wanted since I graduated in 96... someplace where they're giving me a shitload of responsibility, not much of a safety net to speak of, and a sustaining job in the industry where I actually earned my major. Go friggin' figure.
