I've soured on CNN over the past few years... too much style, not enough substance. But I must admit I've been curious about the new service they've been touting since the New Year: Pipeline. Wait... sorry. ((Pipeline)).
It's four video feeds that you can pick and choose from to watch, all live. You have to pay for it, which is just another reason I've soured on them. They've spent an awful lot of time on the reg'lar old CNN touting how awesome Pipeline is, it really turned the domestic network into Infomercial Central.
Today only, you can watch Pipeline for free. No really. No catch. No "free trial subscriptions.' Just go to the CNN Pipeline page and click on the bright, shiny "Watch It Free Now" button. Viola!Right now on Pipeline... well, in the screenshot you can see the New Orleans Mardi Gras cam in feed 2. More of the same is promised through the course of the day.
I'm not sold on it, though. It's only 295¢ a month, but I still don't know what it's like on a regular day. Wall-to-wall what exactly? The video's reasonably good quality, and the sounds quite good (you can hear the individual drunken revelers shouting at the bead-seekers.
Anyway, it's a cool idea, and for today it's worth the price of admission.

This is CNN. No, wait, this is CNN. No, wait, it's this one that's CNN.

You have to wonder (@ least I do, because its me) if they have this live feed and it is a subscriber service, do they have a digital delay for editorial and decency purposes? They are covering Mardi Gras and that event does have a lovely association with bare breasts... Follow me? News porn.
Or, will they have more "raw" reporting, so they go to the genocidal hot-spots of the world and you see more actual violence or fresher aftermath with little or no warning. I mean, you are paying for it. I am too stingy to pay for it, but on the odd day, you never know. It could be worth it.
I soured on CNN the day that somebody decided Aaron Brown was worthy of his current position.
I long for the days when reporters were more... well, reporterly. When CNN news felt more like AP or NPR or (good) BBC and less like an MTV beach party. When CNN news had a more raw and edgy in the field sensibility to it. Even Wolf Blitzer has sold out.
With all of the outlets for us to peruse to get our news fix on every day, I suppose CNN just needs to keep up with the Joneses or get lost in the shuffle. But it does kind of suck.
Every once in a while though there are moments.... Bernard Shaw can still ask a tough question. And Anderson Cooper, while not a total rock star in my book, provided some "real" coverage in Katrina's aftermath.
Sighhhh. You've hit a nerve. ;)

We long for the same days of yore, m'dear. I just can't ever see Miles O'Brien ever having the sobriety of a Reid Collins.
Bernie Shaw, Judy Woodruff, Aaron Brown, Garrick Utley, David French, Reid Collins, Donna Kelley, Lois Hart, and Bob Cain are all CNN alums. They need to get together with Ted Turner and buy the network back from Time Warner. They need to steal Jonathan Mann back from CNN International, Tom Brokaw from NBC, Bill Hemmer and Shepard Smith from Fox and Dan Rather from obscurity. They need to ship the rest of the lot off to Headline News. They need to get rid of that fucking scroll at the bottom of the screen.
Then we'll have our old CNN back.
