Random stuff from Day 11657

Item 1: Did you ever hear that comedian (who was it?) talk about when he was driving in his car with his little daughter, and he looked over and notice that she was just staring out the window with this huge smile on her face. He asks, "What are you thinking about?" She replies, "Candy," and he goes into this bit about how adults never enjoy simple pleasures like that.

I was outside just now, and I saw a guy, probably in his late 20's, on a bicycle, weaving in and out of the parked cars, up onto the sidewalk then back off again. He had a huge smile on his face, and as he passes me and goes on up the street, there's a joie-de-vie-filled "yahooooo!" And that reminded me of the comedian's tale.

Item 2: Does it make me a bad man that I really can't get interested in the whole Terri Schiavo thing? I mean, the right has really flown off the rocker about it (apparently, if you listen to them, all Democrats really want this woman dead). The term histrionics comes to mind, but that's only because I'm a liberal elitist. But I'm just not interested. It strikes me that it really is little more than a messy family affair, and in such a case I don't know that I have any right to say what they should do. Would that everyone were so laissez-faire about folks' personal lives.

Item 3: Is it possible that I'm really getting old?

It's not just me... two of my 30-something friends were going to meet up with Jenn and I tonight for some drinks, but after Jenn and I enjoyed dinner and finished watching The Fisher King (Gilliam really came into his own with that movie), I wasn't really inspired to go anywhere. I decided that I'd call them (they were out at dinner with his parents) and invite them to come over to Waterhouse to hang for a bit and maybe have a glass of wine. I just felt like I had so much to do - laundry was still down in the dryer waiting to be folded, the dishes from dinner still weren't done, and it seemed like it was getting late, especially considering I wanted to get an early start on tomorrow because I'm going up to PA to visit Mom for the weekend.

When I called, he didn't pick up, so I left a message saying as much. About five minutes later, he called (hadn't heard my message) and said that he and the woman were tuckered out and were just going to go home. So, no harm, no foul.

There was a time when I only acted this way when it was 3:00 in the morning on a Tuesday and I had a paper to finish or something. When we exchanged phone calls, it was 10:00.

So I fold laundry and pack and do dishes on a Friday night. This is what being an adult is?

Item 4: I'm going up to PA, as I mentioned, to visit my ma... her birthday was Tuesday, and I need to go up and give her flowers and presents, but more to the point I just want to visit. I haven't seen her since Christmas. So I'll be gone this weekend. But I did get the new chart posted. The weekly thing is gonna work out, I think.

Item 5: Two chart related notes, mostly for myself. One) Two versions of that song are receiving plays, so it's logical to count them separately. Two) The actual song title is "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand." Needs to be fixed in all the regular places.

Item 6: Beginning to get geared up for Iowa. Still trying to decide if I want to drive it or fly. Driving's kinda expensive, especially if I'm gonna have to fork over 235¢ a gallon by next month. But if I don't fly, it's not really practical for me to stop in Illinois to see Guth. I'm still crunching numbers on that, though. (The link doesn't go to the production, just the dept's home page... there's not a page for the show just yet.)

C'est tout.

Ahhhh, bless your good memory. I must have asked half a dozen people over the past 72 hours trying to figure that out.
