Trapped by the Mormons, or How I Learned to Love Film

Back in October, I was the Script Supervisor for Cherry Red's very first film, Trapped by the Mormons. Now, we're on the very cusp of its debut here in DC. (Don't worry, NY folks... there will be a NY screening too.)

As such, I'm doing my yeoman's duty here by giving Ian all the free advertisement he can handle. (Actually, that's the only kind of advertisement I do. Actually, I don't do advertisements. Except for this one. Never mind.)

Here's the official press release for the film. Just come see the damn thing. It's Cherry Red in all its unforgiving digital goodness.

WE ALL KNOW MORMONS ARE EVIL...
BUT GOOD GOD, THIS?!

World Premiere of Cherry Red's first feature film, "Trapped by the Mormons,"
set to open doors of new 7th St. movie venue - Warehouse Screening Room

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 24, 2005) - Isoldi Keane, the top recruiter in all of Mormondom, is using his mesmeric powers to ensnare the young, delightful Nora Prescott in his evil web of passion, polygamy, and pamphlets. Can Nora withstand Isoldi's wicked-sexy Mormon wiles? Will Isoldi marry Nora and take her to where the Great Salt Lake meets the Crystal TempleŠor is something darker lurking in her future? ... Slavery! ... Polygamist sex! ... Death!! Cherry Red Productions and Jeff Goode Entertainment conspire to present this hauntingly hip and hilarious remake of the cult horror flick Trapped by the Mormons at the new Warehouse Screening Room.

In the early part of the 20th century, Britain produced more than 30 films depicting Mormons as evil, vampiric perverts. Shown primarily in burlesque houses, the films often portrayed a Mormon villain who used mesmerism to seduce young girls into becoming his polygamous wives. An early work, A Mormon Maid (1916), absurdly linked the Mormons and the Ku Klux Klan. Trapped by the Mormons (1922), the Star Wars of its genre, was so popular that a sequel, Married to a Mormon, was made later the same year.

Pooling resources from its nine-year history of producing horny, hoary theater in Washington DC, Cherry Red filmed Trapped by the Mormons over four weekends in October. A makeshift studio was built in the warehouse storage space of Washington Shakespeare Company in Arlington, Virginia. Much like in Ye Olden Days of filmmaking, each of the film's interior settings was built from scratch using flats and WSC's storage set pieces. Following the shoot, the film was meticulously "aged" using the latest technology and, voila!, a silent film for the twenty-first century!

This silly and sinister remake, starring New York drag kingpin Johnny Kat as Isoldi Keane, also features many of Cherry Red's most notorious cult stars, including Tony Greenberg as old Mr. Prescott, and Monique LaForce as Sadie Keane. New to Cherry Red's fans is 17-year-old Emily Bedford-Riehl as Nora.

Adapted and directed by Cherry Red's artistic director Ian Allen (Cannibal Cheerleaders on Crack, Baked Baby), Trapped by the Mormons was filmed on versatile (and cheap!) DV film by Chris McKenzie (Art Piece, All the Reverend's Men). Richard Renfield composed the synthetic, trip-hop score with instrumentation by DC burlesque superstar DJ Lobster Boy. Other infamous Cherry Redders that leant a hand include Rhonda Key (costume), Kim Deane (set), and Rabbi Weiss (casting).

This world premiere screening also marks the opening of a new movie venue in DC, the Warehouse Screening Room. Located within the Warehouse Theater complex, the small black box space seats 50. The theater is dedicated to screening the work of local and emerging filmmakers.

Trapped by the Mormons is Not Rated. (Probable R for violence, adult situations, and brief nudity.)
