ELP 013.1: Just a light little something to whet the appetite

There wasn't much to this storm, but at least I got to use the shovel (for the first time in nearly two years).

The access roads for NorthCap got covered, as did pretty much everything in the neighborhood. But the main line remained largely snow-free (slight accumulation between the traffic lanes), and except for the last hurrah burst between 5 and 6 this evening, Rhode Island was only wet.

A good start, but it better not be the only thing on the menu.

One final pic:

ELP 013: First snow of the year!!!

Yeah baby! Live- and photoblogging SNOW. Whodathunkit? [4:00pm update below]

First images...

Note in this one that you can already see signs of accumulation... tire tracks on the street.

ELP 011: The "And Yet Another One" Edition

Because I am, apparently, utterly unable or unwilling to write substantive posts on just about anything of late, I'll keep in the vein of recent entries by showing off a picture of my latest adventure: me and Jenn at Monticello. Enjoy.

ELP 009

My first attempt at taking photographs of lightning. I took 188 pictures tonight from the back porch, and this one's the best of the batch. (Clicky to make it bigger.)

ELP 007

ELP 006

So, I've determined that if I wait it out, I can avoid the need to blog about just about everything. There have been at least half a dozen entries over the past couple of weeks that I haven't written just because I haven't felt like it, or felt like I'd be repeating myself. You can thank me later.

The one entry that I'd planned that actually seems to be making it through my filter d'ennui is just a couple of pictures I took a while back. I was testing out Jenn's new digital camera for the purpose of giving her an understandable version of the unhelpful instruction guide Canon provided. I came away with these two photos. Enjoy.

ELP 005

It's been a mighty long time since I've been legitimately excited about a storm. Watching this one over the past few hours has been fun. We even had some thundersnow around 1:45 this morning.

Anyhoo, I don't know what the end result is gonna be, and I have to remember in the future to lop about 25% off the lower end of the forecast accumulation totals that we get about 24 hours beforehand, and then I'll know what to expect, realistically.

Went out venturing and photographing. The results:

When it finally decided it was going to stick, it stuck in the form of a very wet snow. This bush is down the street and is currently hogging up the entire sidewalk with its droopy ways.

This is the coolest part about snow storms: White trees.

The pièce de resistance: A Study in Simultaneity. The RI traffic cam and I take pics at the same time. One good thing: The colors on my camera are at least better than that of DC's traffic cameras. I've circled in red the camera source in each shot. You know, just to more fully embrace the geekitude.

ELP 004: Winter Wonderland

I'm a big fan of snow. Problem is, we don't get that much of it here. So I was excited when the first storm of the season hit on Monday. So excited, in fact, that I took a picture of it. Here's the park behind my house, getting some snow on it.

ELP 002: Popcorn Guy

In the Washington I see every day (and have seen pretty much every day I've been in the city over the past 5.5 years), there are no shortages of the following: clueless tourists, scared white people from the exurbs visiting some thing in the city, federal workers, and folks looking for handouts. All four groups annoy me in one way or another, but I've learned coping strategies for dealing with them all. Sadly, the When-In-Rome rule for dealing with the last group is largely to ignore them or say as little as possible to get past them. There's the occassional surprise, like the one I had tonight.

I was standing in Chinatown waiting for the bus to go home, and out of the corner of my eye I noticed a guy shuffling toward me. I looked his direction and immediately noticed that he was holding out a popcorn tub from the movieplex down the street and a large soda. He'd occassionally drink from that. You could tell Dude wasn't all there. He had as close to a "kindly" look as I've seen on anyone, completely not threatening, just somewhat vacant. And he wasn't looking for anything from anyone. He was offering me popcorn. Just holding out this popcorn bucket with this really pathetic-looking M&M charcter emblazoned on the side.

Now, my Candy-From-Strangers rule holds hard and fast, even here into my early 30's, so I declined. He shrugged and moved to other folks at the bus stop. One guy did take him up on the offer, they nodded and Popcorn Guy moved on. He held out his bucket to folks coming in and out of Metro, but he didn't have any more takers. So he shuffled off, down 7th Street.

Dude just wanted to share his popcorn.

Maybe I'm being hopelessly provincial about this, but it was, in its own odd, sublime little way, very refreshing.

Anyway, for your viewing pleasure, Popcorn Guy:

ELP 001

Since I'm not writing about politics anymore (see previous entry), I gotta do something here. So I'm introducing something new: Everyone Loves Pictures. ELP for short. The pictures will likely have nothing to do with prog-rock, however. Maybe weekly, maybe more, I'll put up some random shot I've taken with the shitty camera integrated into my Sony Clie TJ-37.

Today, something from our eraserboard.
